When you've lived somewhere for over 26 years, you accumulate a mental map that goes way beyond Google. You know which coffee shop has the best morning light, which park is empty on a Tuesday, and which streets look magical in October.
Oregon City is full of these hidden gems, places that the casual visitor might miss, but that make this community feel like home. Here are a few of my favorites.
The End of the Oregon Trail
You can't talk about Oregon City without mentioning the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. But here's the hidden gem: the overlook park above the falls. Most tourists don't make it up there. The view of Willamette Falls from that vantage point is breathtaking, especially on a misty morning when the river is moving fast.
McLoughlin Promenade
The McLoughlin neighborhood is Oregon City's historic treasure. Walking along the promenade, you're surrounded by Victorian and Craftsman homes that have been lovingly maintained for over a century. On a quiet evening walk, it feels like stepping back in time, in the best possible way.
Milo McIver State Park
Just a short drive from downtown Oregon City, Milo McIver is a local favorite that never feels crowded. The disc golf course is one of the best in the state, the riverside camping is peaceful, and the equestrian trails wind through beautiful Willamette Valley scenery. It's the kind of place that reminds you why you live here.
The Farmers Market
Oregon City's farmers market is more than a place to buy produce, it's a community gathering spot. On a Saturday morning, you'll see neighbors catching up, kids running around, and local vendors who genuinely care about what they're growing. It's community in its purest form.
Why it matters for homebuyers
When I help someone buy a home in Oregon City, I don't just show them the house, I show them the community. Because the house is just the starting point. The coffee shops, the parks, the trails, the neighbors, that's what makes it a home.
If you're considering Oregon City or any of the Clackamas County communities, let me show you what I've discovered over 26+ years. I think you'll fall in love with it too.
